Gas Chromatography Heater Case History
Application
Purge and trap sample concentrators and autosamplers are used to introduce samples to gas chromatographs and other analysis instrumentation. The samples are heated in order to separate gases and liquids.
Design Requirements
The OEM needed a turnkey assembly for heating test samples with an accuracy of ±0.1°C at 300°C (572°F). Due to the rotation and indexing feature of the part, one set of heater leads was desired. The designer was considering using a two-piece machined assembly with four cartridge heaters but anticipated problems with temperature uniformity and termination reliability.
Solution
CAS designed a one-piece machined cast-in heater with one precision bent tubular heater that was formed to provide the desired temperature uniformity. The heated part was also anodized to aid cleaning and to increase surface hardness.
